Before you know it, you're the crazy cat lady in the scary house

Hmmm ...

June 14, 2005 ... 1:18 p.m.

Bootsie: “Make me an auntie.”
Eibisch: “Um, yeah.”
Bootsie: “Come on! Be a sport!”

My grandma fell down Friday and broke her right wrist. She broke her left one a few years ago and it was never properly set, so it healed all wonky.

She was weeding the flowers Mom planted and Grandpa was out talking to a neighbor and a contractor. Grandma was wedding, stood up and lost her balance. She was at the top of a slope and, although it wasn’t steep, she just tumbled. I think she put out her hand to stop her fall. My grandpa must’ve been horrified. He has CMT and there was no way he could’ve stopped her or even gotten her back inside. The contractor ran and picked her up. I think he must’ve put her in their van, too.

Gramps took her to the doctor. Not the emergency room. A general practitioner. The gp took x-rays, told them she had a telescopic fracture, which is the kind of break she had of her shoulder.

Drink your milk, people.

Anyway, the gp made an appointment with an orthopedist for Tuesday and sent them home. No pain meds, no temp cast.

That was 11 am or so. Grandpa called my mom to pick them up some groceries and told her about Grandma at 4:30 pm. Mom couldn’t figure out why she was sent home with nothing and I was like “Oh, hell no!” So the three of us went to their condo. Grandma’s arm was/is black from her elbow to her wrist and it had this sick looking bump. My poor grandma. I know it hurt her something fierce, but she never complained.

We ended up spending the better part of Friday evening in the emergency room. She got another set of x-rays and her is not, and obviously is not, a telescopic fracture. Both arm bones are broken at the wrist and one bone is on top of the other. And her gp didn’t even give her a brace. The ER doc put her in a temporary cast and absolutely could not believe she had nothing on it all day.

She is having surgery today, within the next ½ hour. With is the same ortho who did my knee.

Well ... my bedroom renovation is going along swimmingly. I still have to get some new bedding, but that’s about it.

I just sat in my room all day and read Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time. I think the series is wonderful and people who want it banned for “witchcraft” are silly people who obviously have not read the book.

Besides, the author was a member of the church I attended when I spent summers in Chicago.

And is anyone my age looking forward to the December release of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe movie? I have all the books, too!

Anyone? Just me then? Alrighty!

I may have to borrow Brittany, so I don’t look like a total clown. Cripes, maybe I should have a baby -- if only to go to movies and buy books and dvds without feeling like a dork.

Sigh.

The three of us went shopping Sunday and I got a whole mess of clothes. 5 skirts, 6 tops. They are very cute. Several are vintage/retro/1950’s looking, which I love. I got matching nail polishes for each, too.

I’ve suddenly become quite girly. It’s a bit disconcerting.

The annual family reunion is in a couple of weeks. One of my cousins, actually my 1st cousin once removed, had a baby last November. So this will be the first time we see him. I bet he’s a cutie, his older brother is.

Bootsie’s bringing someone she used to work with. I don’t know what to make. Probably some breads, that was last year’s big hit. I just hate making apple bread or apple pie or anything to do with peeled apples, really. Without fail, I end up peeling my thumbnail.

Oh, the trials and tribulations of being Eibisch.
